The Wimmera Mallee regions' future firefighters will compete in the State Urban Junior Championships for Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria this weekend.

The event will be held in Horsham and is expected to draw around 2000 people to the town.

CFA District 17's John Davies says kids 11-17 years old will compete in a range of events for the public to watch.

"We've got 80 teams coming from all over Victoria, they compete in events using hoses hydrants and some water and they compete over 2 days," he said.

"The CFA puts some general activities on the side and the general public is welcome to come along."

Local nurses are being nominated for the annual HESTA awards. Read More
Time is running out for people across the Wimmera Mallee to nominate an outstanding nurse for the annual HESTA Australian Nursing Awards.

Award categories include Nurse of the Year, Graduate Nurse of the Year and Innovation in Nursing with award winners sharing in $30,000 of education and financial support.

"It's important for local residents to make a nomination; surely there's a nurse in your local community worthy of recognition," CEO of HESTA, Anne-Marie Corboy said.

"Nominate a nurse who's made a different to your local community."

Wimmera Mallee residents are invited to walk to corridors of Parliament House on an open day towards the end of next month.

State Minister Peter Walsh says this is a great opportunity to see one of the state's best known landmarks and ask parliamentary members questions.

He says thousands of visitors visit Parliament House every year.

"One of the great heritage buildings of Victoria, and the seat of the State Government obviously here so people have the opportunity to come along and have a guided tour," he said.

"They can get an understanding of how parliament works."

Police are looking for more information on a single vehicle accident yesterday. Read More
Police are seeking witnesses after the death of a 36 year old Woorinen man in a single vehicle accident at Pyra yesterday.

The man was driving an unregistered off-road buggy and towing a 6 x 4 trailer along Chillangolah Road west of McLennans Road at around 2.30 yesterday afternoon,  when he lost control of the vehicle.

The buggy moved into the left hand shoulder of the road and the driver over corrected crossing to the right hand side of the road, and crashing into a tree on the road reserve.

The man died instantly at the scene. Swan Hill Police Sgt Brendan Rondoe is appealing for possible witnesses.

"Police are inducting investigations into the collision, anyone that may be able to assist police, please contact us on 5036 1600," he said.
